Johann Eck foi um dos primeiros teólogos a defender a doutrina católica romano-germânica contra as ideias reformistas de Martin Luther e outros líderes reformistas do século 16. Suas obras foram lidas por líderes religiosos como Philipp Melanchthon, Martin Bucer, Ulrich Zwingli e John Calvin, que eram todos influenciados pelas ideias de Johann Eck.
La respuesta de Eck no se hizo esperar y ese mismo año publicó su obra De primatu Petri, una verdadera apología del papado contra los planteos luterano. El 15 de julio Johann Langius Lembergius, rector de la Universidad de Leipzig, pronunció el discurso de clausura, donde cada uno de los dos grupos reivindicó la victoria para sí mismo.
8 de dic. de 2021 · In June 1519, the theologian Johann Eck (l. 1486-1543), a former friend of Luther's, arranged a debate with Luther's co-reformer Andreas Karlstadt (l. 1486-1541) at Leipzig. Luther attended the event and again maintained that the pope was not above scripture and had no authority over souls in purgatory whose state of sin could not be known by the living.
23 de jul. de 2020 · The disputation had its genesis in December of 1518 when Johann Eck published a set of twelve theses to be debated at Leipzig University. The initial challenge went to one of Luther’s colleagues, Andreas Karlstadt, but in subsequent announcements of the debate, it became clear that Eck’s target was truly Luther himself.
13 de jul. de 2019 · This very week five hundred years ago, the champion of the Protestant Reformation Martin Luther was in the German city of Leipzig debating against the Catholic professor Johann Eck. Ironically, at a theological level the relatively unknown Leipzig Debate (1519) was infinitely more important than the publication of the famous 95 Theses (1517).
