Jean Meslier nació - casualidad de la vida - en 1664, año en el que Molière presentó Tartufo, obra condenada por la Iglesia por atacar la religión. En el sacerdocio de Meslier, los pobres siempre encontraban un banco para sentarse; sus discursos atacaban frontalmente la explotación del pueblo por la aristocracia.
