In order to provide his children with a replacement mother figure Friederike’s father decided to remarry. His choice of wife was his late wife’s sister and his children’s favourite aunt, Princess Charlotte of Hesse-Darmstadt. Friederike and her siblings were all in Darmstadt to attend the ceremony which was held on 28 September 1784.

Friederike married Duke Charles of Mecklenburg-Strelitz on 18 September 1768 in Darmstadt. After her death, Charles married her younger sister Charlotte in 1784. Friederike died in 1782 in Hanover (where Charles was field marshal of the household brigade), three days after giving birth to her tenth child, Augusta, who lived just one day.

Charlotte was the sole heiress of the county of Hanau and married on 5 April 1717 Crown Prince Louis VIII of Hesse-Darmstadt (1691–1768). Friederike Dorothea died on 13 March 1731 and was buried on 17 or 25 March 1731 in the family vault of the Hanau counts in the St. John's Church (Hanau) (currently known as Old St. John's Church) in Hanau.
Friederike was born in Darmstadt, the eldest daughter of Prince George William of Hesse-Darmstadt, second son of Louis VIII, Landgrave of Hesse-Darmstadt, and Countess Maria Louise Albertine of Leiningen-Falkenburg-Dagsburg. She married Duke Charles of Mecklenburg-Strelitz on 18 September 1768 in Darmstadt. [1] They had ten children together.
