Nicolaes Maes, además de la pintura de interiores que practicó a lo largo de la década de 1650, cultivó el retrato, al que se dedicó exclusivamente a partir de 1660. Dentro de ese género trató modalidades como el retrato colectivo e individual, en los que presentó a sus modelos de cuerpo entero o de medio cuerpo.
