She was born on 24 February 1749, the only child of George Bowes MP, of Streatlam Castle and Gibside in County Durham, and his second wife, Mary, heir of Edward Gilbert, of St Paul’s Walden in Hertfordshire.

27 de mar. de 2024 · On 28 September 1853, she married Claude Bowes-Lyon. He became the 13th holder of the Earldom of Strathmore and Kinghorne following the death of his brother Thomas in 1865. Frances then assumed the title and style of Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne. Together the couple had 11 children.
Mary Cecilia Bowes-Lyon was born on 30 January 1932 at Gastlings, the Bowes-Lyon family home in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. Her father, Michael Bowes-Lyon (1893–1953), was the fifth son of Claude Bowes-Lyon, 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne and Cecilia Bowes-Lyon, Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne (née Cavendish-Bentinck).
