James Russell Lowell, poet, essayist, diplomatist, and scholar, was born at Cambridge, Massachusetts, on February 22, 1819, the son of a Unitarian minister. Educated at Harvard College, he tried the law, but soon gave it up for literature.
James Russell Lowell wrote “The First Snowfall” in 1847 affected by the loss of his first child Blanche. She was born on December 31, 1845, and lived only fifteen months. Lowell had four children among them only his daughter Mabel survived past her infancy.
