Herbert John Gladstone, 1st Viscount Gladstone, was a British Liberal statesman. He was Home Secretary from 1905 to 1910 and Governor-General of the Union of South Africa from 1910 to 1914. Herbert Gladstone was the youngest son of William Gladstone and his wife Catherine, and was born in Downing Street where his father was living at the time as Chancellor of the Exchequer.
He was the brother of William Henry Gladstone and Herbert Gladstone, 1st Viscount Gladstone. He was educated at the Revd William Montagu Higginson's church preparatory school in Norfolk, and then at Eton College, and at King's College London. Herbert John, Viscount Gladstone, was the fourth and youngest son of William Ewart Gladstone and his wife Catherine. He was born on 7 January 1854 at 12, Downing Street (now No. 11), which his father then occupied as Chancellor of the Exchequer. He was thus born at the heart of politics, and remained there for most of his life.
