Historic counties of England Explanatory notes [ edit ] ^ Some areas at the edges of the historic county are not within the four modern ceremonial counties named after Yorkshire, having been transferred to neighbouring counties for administrative and ceremonial purposes, notably in 1974 when areas were transferred to County Durham , Cumbria , Lancashire and Greater Manchester .
Historic county tripoints. The table contains a list of the 58 principal tripoints for the historic counties of England prior to 1800. As the English county boundaries had remained essentially unchanged since the eleventh century, the list can thus be seen to represent the "original" locations of the English county tripoints.
