Richard Neville, 5th Earl of Salisbury KG PC (1400 – 31 December 1460) was an English nobleman and magnate based in northern England who became a key supporter of the House of York during the early years of the Wars of the Roses. He was the father of Richard Neville, 16th Earl of Warwick, the "Kingmaker".
He was born on the 22nd of November 1428, and whilst still a boy betrothed to Anne, daughter of Richard Beauchamp, earl of Warwick. When her brother's daughter died in 1449, Anne, as only sister of the whole blood, brought her husband the title and chief share of the Warwick estates. Becoming Warwick It's not clear why Richard's claim to be heir to the earldom of Warwick was superior to that of Edward Beaufort, which you also refer to. I've put an explanation in the reference. "By 1445 Richard had been knighted". Any indication as to why (he was only 17).
