Johann Frederick I, Elector of Saxony (30 June 1503, Torgau – 3 March 1554, Weimar). On 13 November 1513 Johann married secondly Margaret of Anhalt-Köthen in Torgau. They had four children: Maria (15 December 1515, Weimar – 7 January 1583, Wolgast), married on 27 February 1536 Duke Philip I of Pomerania-Wolgast.

The painting was one of the first commissions received from Frederick III, Elector of Saxony, together with the Seven Sorrows Polyptych and the central panel of the Dresden Altarpiece. Dürer knew the elector during the latter's short stay in Nuremberg in April 1496. Dürer portrayed the elector again in an engraving in 1524. Description

In Weimar on 26 May 1555 John Frederick II married his first wife, Agnes of Hesse, Dowager Electress of Saxony. Six months later she suffered a miscarriage and died, on 4 November 1555. In Weimar on 12 June 1558 John Frederick II married his second wife, Countess Palatine Elisabeth of Simmern-Sponheim , daughter of the later (1559) Frederick III, Elector Palatine .
