Earl of Strathearn, der aus einer Familie gälischen Ursprungs abstammte. Seine Mutter war höchstwahrscheinlich Maud, eine Tochter des anglonormannischen Adligen William d’Aubigny, 3. Earl of Arundel, mit der sein Vater in erster Ehe verheiratet war. Mit dessen Tod im Jahr 1223 trat er sein Erbe an und übernahm den Titel des Earl of Strathearn.

Maol Íosa V of Strathearn (also Maol Íosa of Orkney) was the last of the native Gaelic family of Strathearn mormaers. He ruled Strathearn as Mormaer/Earl between 1330 and 1334 , and Earl of Orkney between 1331 and 1350. His career started off so promisingly. After the death of his father Maol Íosa IV in 1329, he inherited Strathearn.
