The original 13 colonies were quite diverse and they grew quickly. At the turn of the 18 th century, the population of the colonies consisted of about 250,000 European settlers and African slaves. On the eve of the American Revolution, 75 years later, that population had grown to almost 2.5 million.
The New England Colonies were formed by the joining of various Massachusetts colonies with other colonies in the region. What began as a small Puritan settlement in Plymouth, now became a large collection of colonies that formed a larger colony that was recognized as one of the Thirteen Colonies by the British Crown by name of “Massachusetts”.

Many factors played a role in the colonists' desires to fight for their independence. Not only did these issues lead to war, but they also shaped the foundation of the United States of America.
Overview. Students will use both primary and secondary sources (links in lesson) to research one or a group of the 13 original colonies and create a report or presentation. They will also identify the colonies on a map quiz. Being able to identify geographical locations and use map skills is always beneficial, for both school and beyond.
