Principala lucrare a lui Fustel de Coulanges este Cité Antique, în care autorul se ocupă de istoria instituțiilor politice din Franța.

Dans la préface à sa "Cité antique", il affirme par exemple que c'est « l'imitation maladroite de l'Antiquité » par les révolutionnaires de 1789 qui a conduit à « la Terreur » de 1793.
