The first Duke of Wellington has at least 90 English pubs named after him. But not, sadly, the one owned by his descendent Sofia Wellseley, who runs the Fox and Pheasant with James Blunt, hard by the Chelsea football stadium.
He was right, by the time the Crystal Palace was opened by the Queen, they had all gone! He died at Walmer Castle in Kent in 1852 and was given the honour of a State Funeral. It was a magnificent affair, a fitting tribute to a great military hero. The Iron Duke is buried in St. Paul’s Cathedral next to another British hero, Admiral Lord Nelson.
Arthur Wellesley, 1st duke of Wellington, (born May 1, 1769, Dublin, Ire.—died Sept. 14, 1852, Walmer Castle, Kent, Eng.), British general. Son of the Irish earl of Mornington, he entered the army in 1787 and served in the Irish Parliament (1790–97). Sent to India in 1796, he commanded troops to victories in the Maratha War (1803).
