She married her cousin Christian VII of Denmark at the age of 15. They married at Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen in 1766. Nobody had told her that the bridegroom was mentally ill. She had a son, Frederick, in 1768.

In September 1774 she was visited by the traveller and adventurer Nathaniel Wraxall ; during this visit he collected a lot of information about her life in Denmark that later formed the basis of his memoirs.

The youngest and posthumous daughter of Frederick, Prince of Wales, by Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, Caroline Matilda was raised in a secluded family atmosphere away from the royal court.
