Katherine taught Mary Spanish in preparation for the latter's marriage to Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and King of Spain (Charles later pulled out of the marriage, infuriating Henry). Vives was a Spanish humanist, and taught Mary her other subjects.

The Tudors always feared rebellion but they centralised government, used propaganda and had a secret service.
