The 1770s saw abolition in most of the northern colonies, whereas beforehand, slavery was legal in most or all of Britain's American colonies. I don't really know why, like if the colonists were held back by British Parliament and judges from outlawing slavery in their fiefs, or if abolition was simply considered in the spirit of the revolution.
