William Harry Hay was born on 3 May 1823. He was the only son of four children born to Lady Elizabeth FitzClarence and William Hay, 18th Earl of Erroll.

  4. Charles Gore Hay, 20th Earl of Erroll KT, CB (7 February 1852 – 8 July 1927), styled Lord Hay until 1891, was a Scottish soldier and Conservative politician. Erroll was the son of William Harry Hay, 19th Earl of Erroll, and his wife Eliza Amelia, daughter of General the Hon. Sir Charles Gore. He succeeded his father in the earldom in 1891.
