As we examine Idelette’s life with Calvin, let us focus on several lessons that we can learn from her godly example. For in Idelette we see what can be called the blueprint for Christian marriage. It is the pattern of holy living that Colossians 3:12 says includes “kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering; forbearing one another, and forgiving one another.”
23 de oct. de 2017 · He married a widow, Idelette de Bure, in 1540. She came with two children, and together they had a son who died very young. Idelette died in 1549, leaving Calvin a deeply bereft man. In 1539 Cardinal Jacopo Sadoleto brought a strong challenge to Geneva to return to Catholicism. Calvin replied in what is perhaps his best piece of polemical writing.

Idelette was dangerously ill. Calvin wrote to his friend Peter Viret at Lausanne, whose wife was a close friend of theirs, ‘This brother, the bearer, will tell you in what anguish I now write to you. My wife has been delivered prematurely, not without extreme danger. May the Lord look down upon us in mercy!’.

So he said to one of his adversaries, who had been base enough to reproach him with his domestic losses: ‘Yes,’ replied Calvin, ‘the Lord has given me a son; he has taken him from me.
While Idelette was grieving, John Calvin was making plans for marriage. In February of 1539 Calvin penned a letter to his friend and colleague, William Farel, inviting him to the wedding ceremony. According to the Providence of God however, the wedding did not to take place. Nearly one year later Calvin was still a bachelor.
