17 de nov. de 2019 · Isabella (1849), by John Everett Millais. Millais was only nineteen years old when he painted this piece. It was inspired by John Keats’ 1818 poem, Isabella or The Pot of Basil, which was adapted from Boccaccio’s collection of novellas, Decameron. One novella tells the story of Isabella, a young woman betrothed to a wealthy noble.
Millais stamde af van een oude familie uit Jersey. Hij was het derde kind van John William Millais en Mary Emily Hodgkinson. In 1840 werd Millais reeds op elfjarige leeftijd toegelaten op de Royal Academy of Arts Schools. Hij was de jongste leerling ooit op de RA Schools. Aldaar kwam hij in contact met Dante Gabriel Rossetti en William Holman Hunt.

Millais was born in Southampton in 1829, the son of John William and Emily Mary Millais. His father came from a well-known Jersey family, and his mother nee Evamy came from a prosperous family of Southampton saddlers.
