Nach der Scheidung der Eltern 1951 wächst Fassbinder zunächst bei seiner Mutter auf. Als sie an Tuberklose erkrankt, kommt Fassbinder in ein Kinderheim. Abwechselnd lebt er in Internaten, Heimen oder bei Verwandten.
