Henry Ireton 's own regiment repulsed their Royalist opposite numbers, but Ireton then led at least part of them to the aid of the beleaguered Parliamentarian infantry. 25 de may. de 2024 · Henry Ireton (baptised 3 November 1611; [1] died 26 November 1651) was an English general in the Parliamentarian army during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, and the son-in-law of Oliver Cromwell. He died of disease outside Limerick in November 1651.
A devout puritan, Henry Ireton was an immediate parliamentarian activist rising to the rank of Commissary-General of the New Model Army. Ireton shared Oliver Cromwell's religious enthusiasm and acted as one of his political mentors.
Henry Ireton was born in a house to the west of Attenborough church. During the time of the English Civil Wars (1642 - 1649) he became a famous Parliamentary general who went on to marry a daughter of Oliver Cromwell.
Yet within this the practicalities of warfare in Ireland saw Ireton necessarily draw distinctions between the Irish he faced. His words indicate that he did not see the landless Irish people as intrinsically evil, but as deluded by the propagators of a false religion whom he denounced as ‘these incendiaries of blood and mischief’.
