On the general outbreak of hostilities in Germany, Gallas, as colonel of an infantry regiment, distinguished himself, especially at the battle of Stadtlohn (1623). In 1630 he was serving as General-Feldwachtmeister under Count Collalto in Italy, and was mainly instrumental in the capture of Mantua in the War of Mantuan Succession.

Vida y Biografía de Matthias Gallas. (Matthias Gallas, conde de Campo y duque de Lucera; Trento, 1584-Viena, 1647) General austriaco. Sirvió al ejército alemán y a la liga de príncipes católicos y resaltó en el lugar de Mantua (1630). En 1634 remplazó a Wallenstein en el mando del ejército del Imperio austriaco.
