Mary Sidney Herbert, Countess of Pembroke, wrote the works attributed to William Shakespeare. To this end, the Mary Sidney Society is dedicated to supporting research about and promoting widespread interest in the life and work of Mary Sidney and her relationship to the plays and sonnets.
Mary Sidney was the daughter of Henry Sidney and Mary Dudley. She was born on 27 October 1561 at Tickenhall near Bewdley in Worcestershire. She was well educated, which was unusual for a girl at the time. She knew French, Italian, Latin and Greek. When she was fifteen, she married Henry Herbert, Earl of Pembroke.

The first woman to publish a play in English, Mary Sidney was fluent in numerous languages, an accomplished musician, and had an alchemical laboratory at her home.
