  2. Biography. Jesse was the son of Ulysses S. Grant and Julia (Dent) Grant. He was born in 1858 at St. Louis, Missouri and was named after his paternal grandfather. Jesse was just six years old when he, along with his mother, joined General Grant at City Point, Virginia in 1864 where he was "practically a front-line witness to the Civil War." [1]
