The Memphis Belle: A Story of a Flying Fortress is a 1944 documentary film which provides an account of the final mission of the crew of the Memphis Belle, a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress. In May 1943 it became the third U.S. Army Air Forces heavy bomber to complete 25 missions over Europe, but the first to return to the United States.

Story of a Flying Fortress. Summary. The Memphis Belle, a B-17 "Flying Fortress" was assigned to the 324th Bomb Squadron, 91st Bomb Group, at Bassingbourn, Cambridgeshire, England, during the early part of the USAAF strategic bombing campaign during World War II.
Lt Col William Wyler. Wyler, promoted to lieutenant colonel in late 1943, wore this uniform while in Italy working on his next documentary, “Thunderbolt!” This color film chronicled fighter-bomber operations in the closing months of the war. Wyler left active military service when the war ended in 1945.
