May also came from a theatrical family. She was the daughter of the prominent tragedian E. L. (Edward Loomis) Davenport (1814-77) and sister to Fanny Davenport (1850-98), one of the reigning American actresses of the day.

  3. Edward Loomis Davenport was born in Boston, Mass., on Nov. 15, 1815. In spite of family opposition, he went on the stage, making his debut in 1836 under the stage name Mr. E. Dee, playing Parson Willdo in A New Way to Pay Old Debts. For the next 10 years he played a wide variety of roles in stock companies and on tour.
