The decades of the 1930s and the 1940s are known as the “golden age” of American journalism. American foreign correspondents working for print publications and radio networks reported on the rise of the Nazi regime in Germany. American war correspondents covered the fighting in Europe and the Pacific, but also the murder of the European Jews.
For three decades, amid the sweeping events of the first half of the twentieth century, no journalist was more controversial, more iconoclastic, or more quoted than Dorothy Thompson. At the pinnacle of her career, Thompson’s syndicated news column, “On the Record”—one of the longest-running columns ever—reached millions of people around the globe.

With-in a year of her article’s publication, he’d taken power and begun to crush his opponents, persecute Jews and build a war machine. Recognizing that she’d made an egregious error, Thompson wrote article after article exposing Hitler’s brutality.

He “had a horror of being known as ‘Mr. Dorothy Thompson,’ ” journalist Jimmy Sheean thought, watching the marriage fade into “a hopeless simulacrum.” Moments of solidarity between the couple became the exceptions rather than the rule.
