Born Joan Ann Plowright on Oct. 28, 1929, in Brigg, Lincolnshire, England, she was the daughter of Daisy Margaret and William Ernest Plowright, a newspaper editor. Raised in nearby Scunthorpe, she was encouraged by her mother to participate in the productions of the amateur theater group that she oversaw.

Dame Joan Ann Plowright (Lady Olivier) Sitter in 12 portraits. Plowright trained at the London Old Vic Theatre School and in 1956 joined the English Stage Company at the Royal Court Theatre. In 1957 she played opposite Laurence Olivier (whom she married in 1961) in The Entertainer and was Beattie in Arnold Wesker's Roots (1959).

In 1953 Leigh travelled to Ceylon to begin filming Elephant Walk with Peter Finch but her continuously deteriorating mental condition forced her to return to England where she stayed at home with Olivier.
