  3. Vawter, Ron. Ron Vawter (1948-1994) was a seminal figure in New York's downtown experimental theater scene from the 1970s until his death. Born in Latham, N.Y., Ron Vawter was raised in a military family. In the mid-1960s during the Vietnam War Vawter joined the Special Forces, also known as the Green Berets.
