Souffrant de diabète, elle doit en 2001 subir l'amputation du pied droit, mais elle continuera à se produire, en chaise roulante, jusqu'au début de l'année 2005.

Shirley Horn no duda en encomendar su sublime voz al abrigo de una sección de cuerdas y a la orquesta dirigida por Johnny Mandel. Podría argumentarse que el resultado rebosa un exceso de dulzura. Pero lo cierto es que sacar adelante un repertorio tan adornado como este, demuestra que a Horn, y a su piano, les sobra talento para hacer trascender hasta el más romántico de sus trabajos.
Shirley Horn was born on May 1, 1934, in Washington, D.C. Her father was a General Accounting Office clerk and her mother was a homemaker. At the encouragement of her mother, who wanted Horn to become a pioneering African American classical artist, she began playing piano at age 4.
