Born in 1641, Robert fancied himself a bit of a political player (via Britannica ). Charles, the current Earl Spencer, wrote in "The Spencers: A Personal History of an English Family" that "nearly 200 years on, my father would talk about him with an ashamed, resigned chuckle" (via Vanity Fair ).

His father was Henry Spencer, 1st Earl of Sunderland, who was killed at the First Battle of Newbury, and his mother was the Lady Dorothy Sidney, daughter of Robert Sidney, 2nd Earl of Leicester. At the age of three he inherited his father's dignities, becoming Baron of Wormleighton and Earl of Sunderland.
