En 1298 Escocia fue invadida por un gran ejército dirigido por el rey de Inglaterra Eduardo I. El 22 de julio de 1298, Eduardo derrotó en la batalla de Falkirk a las tropas de Wallace y éste se vio obligado a ocultarse. Vivió durante cierto tiempo en Francia pero regresó y fue capturado cerca de Glasgow por el escocés sir John de Menteith.
