Sozen Yamana was born in 1404 as the third son of Tokihiro Yamana, the head of the Yamana clan. His name was given a character from the 4th Shogun Yoshimochi Ashikaga, and he used to call himself Mochitoyo, but in his later years he became a priest and took the name Sozen (throughout this story, he will unify his name with Sozen).
30 de ago. de 2017 · Tensions began to rise and eventually led to the Hosokawa and Yamana clans fighting within the city of Kyōto in 1467, thus beginning the Ōnin War. The war ended with no clear victors. Both Hosokawa Katsumoto and Yamana Sōzen both died in 1473, just four years before the end of the war. By 1477, the city of Kyōto laid in ruins.

17 de nov. de 2018 · Under Sōzen, the Yamana, together with the Hatakeyama and the Hosokawa, played an essential role in the shogunate. Ironically, Hosokawa Katsumoto (細川勝元, 1430-1473), a kanrei (shogunal deputy) and Sōzen's son-in-law, was also his fiercest enemy.

Yamana Sōzen était le fils de Yamana Tokihiro (1367-1435), chef du clan Yamana. Tokihiro était le Shugo (gouverneur) des provinces de Tajima, Inaba et Hoki. Tokihiro, qui était souvent en mauvaise santé, prit sa retraite en 1433 et passa ses nombreuses terres à son fils Sōzen.
Yamana Sōzen (山名 宗全, July 6, 1404 – April 15, 1473) was originally Yamana Mochitoyo (山名 持豊) before becoming a monk. Due to his red complexion, he was sometimes known as Aka-nyūdō, "the Red Monk".
