It emerged from the Muslim Brotherhood movement and was inspired by the Islamic Revolution in Iran. PIJ is committed to the destruction of Israel and to the creation of an Islamic state in historic Palestine, including present-day Israel.
Fathi Shaqaqi (1951 –1995) was the co-founder and Secretary-General of the Islamic Jihad Movement in Palestine. He was assassinated in Malta by Mossad agents, on October 26, 1995. Shortly after the Iranian Revolution, Shaqaqi wrote a book, "Imam Khomeini, The Islamic Solution and the Alternative", which praised Ayatollah Khomeini and his approach to an Islamic state.
