With the German economy unlikely to last in a long war, Field Marshal Alfred von Schlieffen – Chief of Staff of the German Army - set out a new strategy aimed at a quick victory. It would become known as the Schlieffen plan.
Biographie. Alfred est issu de la famille noble poméranienne von Schlieffen (de).Fils de Friedrich Magnus von Schlieffen (de), commandant général prussien à Berlin et après avoir été diplômé du lycée de Joachimsthal, il entre dans l'armée en 1854 puis à l'état-major en 1863, et participe en 1866, en tant que capitaine de l'état-major, à la bataille de Sadowa.

Alfred von Schlieffen, pictured in 1906 Schlieffen’s idea was perfected in the winter of 1905 when, as a result of the Russo-Japanese war, Russia was eliminated as a serious threat to the European status quo for the foreseeable future.
In 1904 Moltke was made Quartermaster-General; in effect, Deputy Chief of the General Staff. In 1906, he became chief on the retirement of Alfred von Schlieffen. His appointment was controversial then and remains so today. The other likely candidates for the position were Hans Hartwig von Beseler, Karl von Bülow and Colmar Freiherr von der Goltz.
