Humphrey de Bohun entstammte der anglonormannischen Familie Bohun. Er wurde als dritter Sohn von Humphrey de Bohun, 4. John de Bohun, 5th Earl of Hereford (23 November 1306 – 20 January 1336) was born in St Clement's, Oxford to Humphrey de Bohun, 4th Earl of Hereford and Elizabeth of Rhuddlan, a daughter of Edward I of England . After his father's death at the Battle of Boroughbridge, the family lands were forfeited.
While his grandfather Humphrey de Bohun (c.1200-1275) was alive, he was deputy Constable of England. The office of Constable was hereditary, and he inherited it, along with his grandfather's titles and estates, on his grandfather's death. He became 7th Earl of Hereford and 8th Earl of Essex.

Humphrey de Bohun, 6th Earl of Hereford (About 1309 to 1311 – 1361). Margaret de Bohun (3 April 1311 – 16 December 1391), married Hugh Courtenay, 2nd Earl of Devon. Gave birth to about 16 to 18 children (including an archbishop, a sea commander and pirate, and more than one Knight of the Garter) and died at the age of eighty.
