Framework Knitting. Strutt’s North Mill houses two examples of these frames. The older of the two dates to around 1750, the younger to around 1800. The machine’s construction requires a number of different skills including carpentry and blacksmithing / metal working to produce the wooden frame and intricate metal parts of the machine.
JEDEDIAH STRUTT (1726-1797), British inventor and manufacturer, was born at South Normanton, Derbyshire, where his father occupied a farm, on the 28th of July 1726. He was educated at a good country school, with a view to becoming a farmer, but, showing great aptitude for mechanical arts, he was in 1740 articled for seven years to a wheelwright at Findern, near Derby.
Jedediah Strutt, (1726 - 1797) or Jedidiah Strutt - as he spelt it - was a hosier and cotton spinner usually connected to Belper, Derbyshire, although also associated with Milford, Derby and Sth Normanton, Derbyshire. He was the son of William Strutt and Martha Statham, and was born at South Normanton, near Alfreton in Derbyshire on 25th July 1726.

Strutt and his brother-in-law William Woollat developed an attachment to the stocking frame that allowed the production of ribbed stockings. Their machine became known as the Derby Rib machine, and the stockings it produced quickly became popular.
