Günther Prien had been considered as namesake for the 1967 commissioned guided missile destroyer Lütjens. However the legend surrounding Prien, that he had distanced himself from Nazism and had become an active member of the German resistance and was held captive at the Wehrmachtgefängnis Torgau (Torgau Wehrmacht Prison), turned out to be false.

Günther Prien boarded U-47 for the last patrol on 20 February 1941. This is now being questioned, as the traditional credit for U-47 's sinking has always gone to the British destroyer HMS Wolverine , but new data suggests that this destroyer actually attacked Eckermann's UA , which was forced to withdraw with heavy damage.

Günther Prien. Günther Prien, né le 16 janvier 1908 à Osterfeld (en province de Saxe) et mort disparu dans l' Atlantique Nord en mars 1941, est l'un des sous-mariniers allemands les plus connus de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, notamment pour avoir commandé l' U-47 qui coule le HMS Royal Oak à Scapa Flow en Écosse.
Günther werkte als boodschapper en bezorger, waarbij hij meestal zelf moest afrekenen met de kopers, meestal chagrijninge oude vrouwtjes die hem met onverbloemde minachting behandelden.
