With his brother, James, he created a new style based on an inventive use of classical ideas which appealed to rich patrons for both country and town houses. Interiors designed by Robert Adam typically include ceilings with decoration in low plaster relief around painted panels.

The sculptor Joseph Nollekens designed a monument for Adam but this was never erected (the design is at the Victoria & Albert Museum ).

The most important of these is Culzean (1777–92), Ayrshire, for the earls of Cassilis. Another neo-Gothic work is the interior of Alnwick Castle (c. 1770–80; destroyed in the 19th century), Northumberland.
