He was also instrumental in launching the career of director Steven Spielberg , who described Zanuck as a "director's producer" and "one of the most honorable and loyal men of our profession."

He is properly celebrated for helping revive and create Twentieth Century-Fox, and functioned as its chief of production from the mid-1930s until the mid-1950s, and then again, after a stint as an independent producer, through much of the 1960s.
