Brackett won a second "best screenplay" Oscar for 1953's Titanic (1953); he was also president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from 1949 through 1955. After working on the 1962 remake of State Fair, Charles Brackett fell seriously ill and reluctantly went into retirement.

He is best remembered as the writing partner of director Billy Wilder, who once referred to the pair as "the happiest couple in Hollywood," collaborating on such classics as The Lost Weekend (1945) and Sunset Blvd (1950).

The King and I is a 1956 American musical film made by 20th Century-Fox, directed by Walter Lang and produced by Charles Brackett and Darryl F. Zanuck.The screenplay by Ernest Lehman is based on the 1951 Rodgers and Hammerstein musical The King and I, which is itself based on the 1944 novel Anna and the King of Siam by Margaret Landon.
