William Farel (Guillaume Farel, 1489-1565) was a French evangelist, and a founder of the Reformed Church in the cantons of Neuchtel, Berne, Geneva, and the Canton of Vaud Switzerland. He is most often remembered for having persuaded John Calvin to remain in Geneva in 1536, and for persuading him to return there in 1541, after their expulsion in 1538.

Guillaume Farel, né à Gap ou environs (Hautes-Alpes) en 1489, était le fils d’un notaire apostolique. Sa famille était catholique et très pratiquante. Sans doute, la résidence professionnelle de son père était-elle à Gap et la résidence familiale aux Farels, commune de La Fare-en-Champsaur au nord de Gap.
