Upon his father's death, he inherited Annandale and Hartness in Durham. He had a brother, Adam (d.1143).

He was the first of the Bruce dynasty to hold lands in Scotland after he was granted the Lordship of Annandale by David I of Scotland in 1124.

He died 31 March 1295, and was succeeded by his son, Robert de Brus VI, the second competitor, who married Marjory, daughter and heir of Niel Earl of Carrick, and thus brought this title into the family.
