Previo a su rol como Director de la Oficina País de la OIT para México y Cuba, Pedro Américo tenía bajo su cargo la oficina de país de la OIT para la Argentina. Entre 2001 y 2008 coordinó el programa de Eliminación de Trabajo Infantil (IPEC) de la Organización Internacional del Trabajo (OIT) en Brasil.

Thanks to grant for artistic improvement awarded by Dom Pedro II, Américo was able to practice painting in Paris, where he remained from 1859 to 1864. He was a professor of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts, a position he held until 1866.
