Maria Anna Angelika Kauffmann RA, usually known in English as Angelica Kauffman, was a Swiss Neoclassical painter who had a successful career in London and Rome. Remembered primarily as a history painter, Kauffmann was a skilled portraitist, landscape and decoration painter.
Angelica Kauffmann nació en Coira (Suiza) en 1741. Fue la única hija del matrimonio formado por la noble Cleophea Lutz y el pintor de retratos y murales Joseph Johann Kauffmann. Ambos se volcaron encarecidamente en educar a su pequeña, enseñándole a leer y a escribir, pero también a aprender idiomas, música y pintura.

Angelica Kauffman commanded great respect in the 18th century art world through her impressive history paintings, sought-after portraits, and membership of the Royal Academy.
Kauffmann was born in Switzerland but made her reputation in Italy and England, where she was a founding member of the Royal Academy. These companion paintings were executed in Rome for Monsignor Onorato Caetani, who in the same year had his portrait painted by Kauffmann.
