John William Waterhouse (1849-1917), affectionately known as Nino in his younger days, was born in Rome on the 6th of April, 1849. Both of his parents were English painters who moved to Italy in pursuit of art. Waterhouse and his parents eventually moved back to England some time in the late 1850's.

John William Waterhouse (born between January and April 1849; died 10 February 1917) was an English painter known for working in the Pre-Raphaelite style. He worked several decades after the breakup of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, which had seen its heyday in the mid-nineteenth century, leading him to have gained the moniker of "the modern Pre-Raphaelite".
Hilas y las ninfas ( Hylas and the Nymphs) es una pintura de John William Waterhouse dentro de su ciclo dedicado a la mitología griega. Pintado en 1896, en la actualidad el cuadro se encuentra en la Manchester Art Gallery. Representa el mito de Hilas, seducido por las ninfas acuáticas (en algunas versiones, hasta que se ahogó).
