James Boswell var en britisk (skotsk) forfatter og jurist. James Boswell, 9. laird av Auchinleck (født 29. oktober 1740, død 19. mai 1795) var en skotsk advokat, forfatter og dagbokskribent, født i Edinburgh som eldste sønn av dommeren Alexander Boswell, 8. laird av Auchinleck, og Euphemia Erskine. Ved farens død arvet han tittelen og Auchinleck House med tilhørende eiendom i Ayrshire .

He was the eldest of the three sons of the advocate Alexander Boswell, Lord of Auchinleck in Ayrshire from 1749, and Euphemia Erskine Boswell. The Boswells were an old and well-connected family, having held the barony of Auchinleck since 1504 and having intermarried with the nobility.
