Romain Rolland, qui a publié en Suisse, pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, ses fameux articles pacifistes rassemblés dans Au-dessus de la Mêlée et qui lui ont valu le Prix Nobel de littérature en 1915, a habité à Villeneuve de 1922 à 1938, y recevant les plus grandes personnalités de l’entre-deux-guerres.
