Born Johann Kaspar Schmidt in Bayreuth in 1806, Stirner (a pseudonym that meant “highbrow”) became one of the most notorious members of the Young Hegelian circle of intellectuals. His contemporaries included Karl Marx, Bruno Bauer, and Ludwig Feuerbach.
